New MP3: "Grey Snow"

Posted on Thu, Dec 4, 2008

Here's another new tune! This one clocks in at almost 6 minutes, making it easily the longest song I've ever done. Add to that a really complicated arrangement, and you've got a song that took way too much time to record. Enjoy!

Grey Snow: (MP3, Lyrics, Share)

Production Notes:

This was a beast to mix, in part because of the 13 tracks of guitars. I recorded them direct-in, and used my fancy new reamp box to feed it later through my Tube Screamer into the Blackface. I miced it with a 414 and an Apex 205, but I mostly used the feed from the Apex. The bass guitar was also reamped through a massive fuzz box to give it edge, and then I enveloped that track to bring the fuzz in and out as needed. The repeated staccato hits is where it's loudest. There's also a Minimoog bassline in parts, also distorted to hell and back.

I really like this song, and the recording is damn good too by the way. Big fan of all the changes you have in here. Makes for a very engaging listen!

It's a very evocative song, both in the words and the music--it brings to mind an image of someone watching the snow falling from a clear, pale-grey sky.

This song is beautifully written. Your vocal transition to falsetto in the chorus is flawless. The one thing about this track that gets me is the tone of the kick drum. It sounds kind of papery. I'd recommend taking a smidge of the highs out, and giving it a little more kick with the mids. Other than that.... yeah. Great tune. The acoustic guitars are subtle, which is perfect.
