The Fight: 5th place out of 13 Entries
After my bleak Spalding Gray offering, it's time to rock out. This is a poppy tune, but it's not one that would make me wince if I heard it on the radio. And that's probably a good thing.
As a side note, this is the first song that I've recorded using my new recording setup. I ditched my expensive VS-1680 and I started plugging things right into my crappy soundcard, using Sonar 3 to get it on tape. I'm really happy with how it came out.
Brian F:
wow, everything is performed super well! production is tops, I like a lot of what's going on here. vox seem a bit forced and throaty at times but overall really good. there's something here that's bothering me that I can't put my finger on. it might just be your plugged in acoustic, not sure. things sound a bit too ... processed. the ending is also weak in my opinion. I'm really into the melody but I'm not sure I'm so sold on the lyrics. B+Mr. Walnut:
It's competently played, but not grabbing me, and the lyrics... not so good. I think the verses are better than the chorus. A bit too smooth, a bit overproduced, and it's not really very clear what the point is. 5.Sober Irishman:
Josh Woodward's track is well done, but I don't like it as much as his other stuff.Krisis:
(***** Classic) J. Holy Christmas on a bicycle, could it be possible for me to love a song more on the first listen than I loved this when it appeared on SomeSongs? Admittedly, I get all wet about Josh's work a lot, but that's usually just because he's playing to my genre bias. This one, though... I think I've listened to it three dozen times in the last forty-eight hours, and I have not even approached being tired of it. I love the stretch for the As on that one killer line, I love all the guitar work, I really like the production, ... the whole affair just brings the Fight in every sense of the word. I can't even imagine what could be added to this song. Another dominator of my iTunes most-played list for Josh, and my first endorsement of him with a SF vote.JoshyBlue:
i like the intro - good play with echo. song reminds me of something else but not sure what. the vocal sounds a bit strange during that high part... the production is very strong - the drums sound good. reminds me of abdominous's entry in that it sounds like a sort of combination of a bunch of poppy hit singles - this one reminds me more of 90s era goo goo dolls type stuff though. the guitar solo is cool - acoustic ROCK. !! pretty good song... but more for the ladies i think. B-The Human Cello:
Ahhh, josh woodward. Why are you so good? I've never had to use the word decent to describe your music ever, its always very good or great. This is different from some of your other stuff too, very nice.Elle 5 of 10 feet tall:
i like when you rock the boy next door type vox and when i dont feel like you are straining too much- at times. The times where you arent forcing at all at all at all-- you sound the bestest :) Instrumentally gorgeous-Mr_Lostman:
The start makes me think its gonna be a Jason Mraz song, but he wouldnt yell like u do. This is really good. Nice poppy mix, love the band backin the guitar and vox. Oh Wow, unique points for the guitar solo. :) This beats out Henrietta for my vote possibility.Abecedarian:
Nice intro good drums, good guitar as always. I like the voice a lot, too. A little vanilla for me, but Im just being picky. This is a good song. The Voice Inside Your Head:
you've got my head bobbing, yes sir. it's nice and soft and poppy but also yelly and loud in spots, a swell blend of parts. at times here your voice sounds kind of blink-182ish, and even though i've never really liked that style, i mean that in a positive "radio-friendly" kind of way, not in a "pop-punk crap" kind of way. sincerely.Hujhax:
I can understand the other reviews that write this off as a genre exercise, but damn people, don't you have ears? And aren't those ears happy to hear this? My ears are happy. I think it's one of the better straight-ahead pop song I've heard on songfight. I first heard this in the wee hours of the morning, and had to give it multiple listens before going to bed. I'd have to concur that I don't get much out of the lyrics, I'm mostly just loving the melodies and superb arrangement. Not jaw-droppingly melodic, but the variations in instruments and dynamics are perfect. The vocal strain sounds interesting. Is that vocal-cord grinding or some sort effect applied to the vocals? Usually I like the slow-down effect on the end of a song, but for me it didn't seem to fit the rest of this song on this one. The song felt more unprocessed and jangly, so that jarring effect kinda stuck out. First pwize. Ding!Jim of Seattle:
That G# on 'Never know where you fall' came just at the right time. I was starting to feel the song was too plain. Big ol' points for production, as usual. I rarely have anything to say about your songs. Most of the time there's really nothing to improve on, it comes down to a matter of my personal taste whether a song ranks high or not as high. (Honorable Mention, #1 Production Hall of Fame)MC Frontalot:
The only really deeply lousy song in the whole fight. Super boring and dry, just a complete dearth of imagination. And the singing = very low quality!!John M:
Production is easily the best part of this. Songwriting isn't interesting, vocals are bad (that straining bit can't be sold as "going for effect," it's just irritating), solo isn't good. While I generally dislike fadeout endings (ironic considering my entry this week, I know), I think a fadeout would work much, much better for an ending; pretty much anything would be better than what's there. I do not like this.Henrietta:
It's true the production is sickeningly radio-friendly, but it's still crazy good. I would like to see you add a few more unique elements to separate this from the pop pack and show off your mad skills. Maybe check out Bleu's album "Redhead" to see what I'm thinking of when I say this.Marcus Kellis:
haha, you got a whole lot of emoting going on in your vocals. very nice music going with this. but the vocals sound like you're in a damn mid-90s alternative rock band. fastball and collective soul-style. lyrics don't seem especially insightful. but they're good enough. this is well-recorded and arranged. just hope that the rest of your debut album doesn't sound identical. you follow. thumbs-upBortwein:
Always bringing the upbeat and driving sounds. I liked it.Dan the Apathetic:
good as usual. stop being so good. everyone needs to suck sometimes. i don't like the way your voice sounds when you sing loudly. you sound kind of constipated like bruce springsteen or something.HeuristicsInc:
oh, nice. cool. good sounds, guitar, good voice, needs more hook. hm... (1)Historyman68:
that stacatto guitar line in the jam part in the 2nd half of the song -- you know what i'm talking about -- That would sound really awesome if it was done on piano. The exact same thing, but stacatto piano, and in octaves like you were doing. Unless you weren't doing it in octaves. The race is on: who will become famous first, Josh or Frontalot? This song seems different enought from your previous stuff, and I like it. I stand by my assertion that that solo section would be better done in piano octaves instead of plucked guitar. Josh's is good. Once again, awesome but not quite my style.Yook:
I like this. I am a sucker for emo. This is emo. Ergo. Also, it sounds pretty.Jack Shite:
excellent production and mix. you always pull off the sweetest guitar tones. this is really nice. has a very counting crows feel to it. are those strings? or a 12 string? anyways, nice job as usual. you bring the shit week after week. #4Blue:
i liked josh's song more than any of his others. it sounded like he was gettin' real instead of just painting by the numbers. i was sad that he got so much crap about it.Krisis:
I was vaguely excited at the start of this ... fun drums, well done guitar effects. Poppy. Sorta reminiscent of "Heavy Metal Drummer." Nice enough. What sold me on the first listen though, and kept me coming back for a half hour afterwards, is that i can hear more of *you* in the singing. In the first couplet there is a tiny crackle in your voice, and the way you stretch for the A on the awesome "never know when you fall" is pop bliss. Letting your voice crack a little around the seams makes your lyrics so much more real to me, and your song so much more accessible. I wish that you would invite a little of this edginess into your vocal performance a little more often. And, you shouldn't be afraid to write pop. And this better wind up with higher than a freakin' 8.OTMonkey:
I enjoyed this one...This is a good pop song. Not usually my cup of tea - but definately worth a thumbs up I reckon. [good]Blue:
wow josh! you are very nearly doing the rocking. better be careful, you'll break your sensitive songwriter guy bone. ;) [good]
