The Fight: Winner out of 23 Entries
One of my stranger, and starker songs. It's definitely the happiest song you'll ever hear about a lunatic murdering his family. I tried to make this song unfold through the verses so that you don't quite understand what's happening until it's all over. Musically, I did what was for me a very sparse arrangement. It needed some motion in the middle so I brought in "the band".

+ The first minute -- heck, the first few *seconds* -- prove to me conclusively that I don't know how to play guitar *or* record -- /me bows + I really liked the tempo change at 2:30 - Still, I felt that the instrumental break after verse 2 didn't quite break things up for me. - I was a bit bored by the time 2:30 came around - Maybe structure it as AABABAC instead of AAAABAC?ethanrand:
Josh knows how to record an acoustic guitar. And he can play the shit out of it. Really nice guitar work, Josh. Beautiful chimes and roof crashing noises. But damn that guitar sounds great! What skill! This is a great one and gives Humbert a run for the money. Really nice voice, Josh. Really nice song.Lutefisk:
Gorgeous guitar playing, tone, and recording. Really pretty chords. Love the triangle. Subtle and sweet. And that rumble is cool too -- like thunder. Nice build of engery with playing style, bongos, double-tracked vox. This one is skillful and really lovely.blindmime:
You always do such great stuff here and this is no exception. Very strong lyric and I love the acoustic. This is the kind of song that will deliver over and over. Exceptional.Chucky:
I like the guitar sound and I like that little noise at about 35 seconds. It IS a bit Steve Earle, but I would've never thought so if Blue didn't say it. Started to get bored with it but then the percussion came in at the right time. Very nice and good song.Hillbilly:
Josh you got my vote, how many fingers you got dude, nice guitar.abecedarian:
Good guitar picking. Very nice song so far. Good effort! The UnDesirable:
Nice guitar playing, nice phat tone. Your vocals are smooth. Like the addition of the extra vocals in the middle. For a 3:44 minute "guy with guitar" style song this is cool.Humbert:
this is my favourite of josh's songs so far; it's more engaging for me than the others. the simple production suits the style, singer and material perfectly. josh's got the goods vocally and on the guitar and wisely sticks to his strengths. one nitpicky production comment - the guitar body is quite resonant and creates its own ambience which makes the vocals seem like they are in a different space.bzl:
Yeah! Guy+guitar is hard to pull off but this is about as good as it gets. Both halves are tricky enough to stay interesting and both are performed flawlessly. I think maybe Red House Painters is who this reminds me of.Jon Eric:
I swear I didn't even notice this was a guy-and-guitar(s) song until Bzl pointed it out. Anyway, I love the lyrics, and that thunder effect there. Overall, it's very strong. My favorite so far (chronologically, that is; I've already revealed my vote [or have I?]).Jim of Seattle:
MY PREDICTED WINNER. Everybody pay attention. Josh is successfully doing what most of the SF guy-and-a-guitar wannabes arent. The lyrics make sense, the changes are interesting, the tune is good, the arrangement is detailed. Well-recorded, well-sung. No complaints. The Sober Irishman:
Bastard with your guitar skills. The bend is cool. The chords and melody are very nice. The triangle in the background fits very well. It would be cool if you could have some sitar in the background. Just before 2:00, something weird happens in the guitar part. I don't have the patience to go back and listen again to make sure I didn't imagine it. The bongos are cool, and the tempo change is very well done. Everything about this song is good. Bastard.
