Horrifying

The fact that she is identified not by a name or a characterization, but merely by a relation to a profession, taking her just that many steps away from herself... Somehow even the blood doesn't sound as painful as that.

I can't figure out the meaning of the line "All we are is sin". What's the underlying thought behind this? Beautiful song by the way.
