 Google Finance Email to a Friend RSS Syndication Posted on Thu, Mar 23 2006 It had to happen sometime, I'm just surprised it took so long. Google just announced their finance site. For those who don't know, I spent a few years working at Yahoo! Finance in sunny California. I left in part because we were stagnant. See the stock charts? I built those. And to give you a good idea of the stagnation, in the four years since I left, they haven't changed a bit (other than the data on most of 'em *grins*). The only thing I've noticed that have changed since I left? Removing Y! Money Manager, the only part of the site I was still using on a regular basis. Now comes Google Finance, announced by Y! Finance's hero turned Google-defector Katie Stanton. I almost didn't even need to click the link. It's great. The essential stock information is neatly laid out on one handy page for each ticker. What happens when you type "Krispy Kreme" in the search box instead of "KKD"? It knows what you want. (I thwapped many people about that when I was there, and it's still boned). And the charts are lovely. What I wouldn't have given to have the option to use Flash or Ajax back then. It's not nearly as robust in the peripheral feature department, they just do one thing, and they do it right. As usual. But hey. Did Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes visit Google on Tuesday? I think not.

I was not aware that you lived in California. Where at specifically? Any chance of heading back out there soon? And possibly dropping into Phoenix? I'll be dug into Phoenix at the end of May. I hope so.

I don't know... from what I hear, the fancy lunch is the only perk of working at Google, and I've been eating nothing but microwave Kung Pao noodle bowls lately. ;)

Yahoo Finance I use it every day. Shameful how when you want to discuss a stock and every post has a troll ready for the response. Google will closely monitor the "boards" they say. Yahoo dropped the ball on that one. I can personally attest that literally hundreds of poster have visited and left the Yahoo Finance message board system never to return after being insulted for no apparent reason. Gone, and we will never know the extent Yahoo might have contributed to the Web2 phenomenon if they had put one ounce of effort into enforcing the communities within their system. Even so today hundreds of stocks have communities trying to discuss and debate in spite of the malevolent interlopers. Good luck Google, keep it clean and friendly and you will gain audience share.
