i've been to hell i spell it, spell it "dmv"
Posted on Tue, Feb 25 2003 As if I didn't have enough fun with the California DMV when I actually lived in the state, the fun keeps happening. I keep getting these threatening letters in the mail saying something along the lines of "Hey! You haven't renewed your registration, we're going to hire hitmen to kill your loved ones if you don't pony up." They're sending these notices to my address in North Baltimore, Ohio. I decided to make a phone call to clear things up. As if it would be that easy. I was greeted by what sounded like a big crackhead guy with a major attitude problem. It turns out I need to visit their website, and print out registration form 256 section J with a long detailed explanation of how, why and when I left the state including photocopies of a bunch of documents in Ohio. When I told him that I don't have a printer or a photocopier, his response was "well don't you ever leave the house?" Why in the world should I have to do all sorts of work to give California enough proof that I have the right to cancel my registration with them? "Because our systems aren't hooked up with Ohio's," says he. So what, is there not a telephone link between Ohio and California? Instead of sending me lots of mail and talking to me on the phone, couldn't they pick up the phone and spend one minute on the phone with the Ohio DMV to verify it for themselves? Christ on toast.
weird thing is, we did the exact same move, from the exact same place, and i just made a notation on the back of the renewal notice for 'reason for not renewing' and everything seems fine. haven't heard anything since from california's dmv?
Well, you see unlike Josh and I, you were probably willing to fill out that bit and send it back. He and I are too cheap to pay for a stamp to solve a problem CA created for itself. They had an opportunity to do it right when Ohio (or in my case NY) demanded the title for the vehicle from them, but they didn't. That's their loss.
I ponied up the cost of a stamp. Twice now. And they keep sending me the delinquent notices. I know they recieved at least one of them because they got new address from one of them.
I've been seeing a lot of other people online complaining about this too. I think that this is the state's latest scam to try and make up some of all the money they waste every year.
